He graduated from Central High, and served as one of the downtown paper boys for the Omaha Bee newspaper, as well as a drug store delivery boy. His father was a World War I veteran, and was in charge of the boilers in one of the downtown department stores. FDR came through Omaha in 1936. Robert also saw many stars when the movie “Union Pacific” premiered in Omaha. When Pearl Harbor occurred, he was working as a bus boy in the dining room of the Blackstone Hotel. On November 21, 1942, he joined the service with five friends. They were sworn in at Offutt, and then went to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Pay when he joined was $50 a month. He was in Boston for a time, learning drafting at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After the training ended, he served in Langley, Virginia. He also trained with the Tuskegee Airmen, but didn’t make the cut to be a pilot. Robert spent time at Keesler Air Base in Mississippi and returned to drafting at Langley. At the end of the war, he used the GI Bill to go to Wayne University in Michigan. He served as a postal carrier in Detroit, Michigan for 25 years. He is against the U.S. involvement in the Middle East. |
