Global Libraries Services Around the World From the clay tablets originating in the second millennium, to the electronic databases of today, libraries have been in existence. Throughout time, as printing and storage technologies have evolved and as literacy rates have risen, the role of libraries has grown to meet the needs of modern society. While the variety of services provided is not uniform for all countries, the existence of libraries is found in every location throughout the world. With the growth of transportation and communication technology, the world has become a smaller planet. In this time of global thought how do libraries reflect the congruency of modern society? Classification systems for library material began with the Han Dynasty in China, 206 B.C. and have evolved as the amount and variety of information has grown. The Dewey Decimal system and the Library of Congress are most widely used in the United States. The Universal Decimal System was established as an offshoot of the Dewey system in 1905. It is used mainly in science and technology libraries in Europe and Asia. The Colon System was founded in 1933 and is used in some libraries in India. The role of different libraries: In the interest of brevity I have chosen 3 countries for comparison to the United States. I chose these countries from the availability of interview subjects, otherwise known as the circulation staff. We are privileged to have 3 international students working in the Bellevue University Library: Thomas from Kenya, Chie from Japan, and JDell from Bahrain. Most countries have a national library. These libraries date back to the Bibliotheque du Roi in France, founded by Charles V, and have evolved into depositories of national resources and function as national bibliographies. These libraries generally receive one free copy of each book printed in their specific country, except from some developing nations where the enforcement of such policies is difficult. With the explosion of information and increase in printing, the task of national libraries has become increasingly difficult. Academic libraries associated with educational institutions remain similar across country boundaries. At the University of Bahrain library, services and systems are similar to those found in most United States universities. The Library of Congress classification system is used to organize the collection and library lending is restricted to four books for undergraduates, or six books for graduate students, for two weeks. Japan and Kenya both have similar academic library policies and services. The greatest variety in library functions and services in countries is in the public library systems. Public libraries began in the time of the Greeks with Julius Caesar and have evolved to the free service-based lending institutions we find in most countries today. While the concept of free lending for a variety of materials is well established in the United States, some countries have only recently begun to expand public library roles. In Bahrain the public libraries began as research centers for historical documents in Arabic. Since the 1970's, the Bahrain library system has expanded from one central library established in 1946, to 8 branch libraries. Currently the library carries materials printed in Arabic or English, in children's, reference, special, and Braille collections. Two books can be checked out to any Bahrain citizen or resident for two weeks and may be renewed one time. The library has 15 PC's on a Local Area Network with one Internet PC and 1 PC for CD-ROM usage. The public library does use the Dewey Decimal System for the majority of library materials.
